In today’s world where social media platforms are dominating the digital world, email marketing might seem outdated, but it is still one of the most effective ways to reach your audience.
An email sequence is an automated flow of emails for your marketing efforts. You have likely seen this when you sign up for a newsletter, register for an event, or sign up for a free piece of information or training.
Today, I will provide some key steps at a high level to help you start your first email sequence.
Step 1: Determine Your Goal
Before creating an email sequence, it’s important to determine your end goal for your email marketing. Are you looking to sell a new product or service, educate your subscribers, provide information, or build relationships? Defining your goal and timeline will help you outline your email sequence more effectively.
Step 2: Choose Your Email Marketing Platform
To create an email sequence, you’ll need to choose an email marketing tool that allows you to automate the process. Some popular options include MailerLite, Mailchimp, and ActiveCampaign.
I personally use MailerLite. Mailerlite has an email sequence available in the free version (up to 2000 subscribers).
Step 3: Determine The Length of Your Sequence
The length of your email sequence will depend on your goal and the type of content you plan to share. A typical email sequence ranges from three to seven emails, but it can be longer or shorter depending on your needs.
Step 4: Craft Your Emails
Each email in your sequence should provide value to your subscribers and move them closer to your end goal. You may want to share educational content, offer discounts, or social proof to build trust.
Step 5: Set Up Your Automation
Most email marketing platforms use a visual interface to build the automation. I like to draft my ideas and logic on paper or a white board before setting it up in the email system.
Using your email marketing platform, set up the automation rules for your email sequence. Rules include when to send an email, any delays and triggers (aka-rules) that remove a subscriber from the sequence.
An email sequence is a powerful tool for building relationships with your subscribers, customers and leads. By defining your goal, choosing the right platform, determining the length of your sequence, crafting your emails, and setting up your automation, you can create a successful email sequence that will help you achieve your business objectives.
Would you like to see how this works in real time on a short sequence?
I published a free-guide on newsletter topics and used a short email sequence.
The steps are the following:
1. Register on a page with your email and name
2. Immediately, on the thank you page, able to download the document
3. An email is sent to you with a link to the document to download.
